Slovenian economy has performed strongly since joining the EU in 2004 at an average growth rate of 5%. Exceeding the EU average, this allowed Slovenia to catch up fast; measured by the GDP per capita, Slovenia now stands very close to the EU average. After the peak in 2007, when the economic growth reached 6.8%, the effects of the global crisis slowed down the growth in Slovenia to 3.4% last year. In the beginning of 2007 Slovenia introduced euro, and was extended invitation to start accession negotiation by OECD at the end of the year. Slovenia remains export-oriented economy with more than two thirds of its foreign trade destined to the EU market. Slovenia is in a unique position with traditionally strong links to the markets of the Western Balkans.
